home   Research: details of families that emigrated

2006

In October I found Ancestors, a site of Ton van Heusden.
It has much information about the families in Zeeland: select genealogy, and name.
In contrast to the most archives, the persons in his database are linked, and with a few mouse clicks one can go to the ancestors or descendants.
With this information, I could add more persons to the genealogy of 'van Hanegem' and 'de Gardeijn'.

This site is also very useful for finding families that emigrated to America. Select emigrants and name to get a list.

2007

On the website Ellis Island records, the emigration details of the 'van Hanegem' family can be found.
Search "van hanegem" gives these results: "Exact Matches (17)"

In April I visited the Central Bureau for Genealogy in the Hague, with a few members of the division Amsterdam of the Duch Genealogical Association.
I found the death announcement of my great grandfather: Dirk van Leeuwen; here you see Sientje van Leeuwen was married to A.C. Bowden, and lived in Melbourne, Elwood (Victoria) Australia.
To get this death announcement, I made an "educated guess", from more than 700 pages of advertisements (till 1970), I choose page 200, and had a direct hit!

In April I discovered, that newspapers from the 'Leiden' area: 'Leidsch Dagblad', 'Leidsche Courant' and 'Nieuwe Leidsche Courant' before 1900 are scanned, and can be seen at: Archief Leiden: kranten (newspapers)

Example: Death announcement ("Advertentie") Sophia van Groeningen:
Source: HDC Media/Leidsch Dagblad
Leidsch Dagblad: (newspaper)
16 December 1897: page 4

From this advertisement, I learned, that her daughter 'Sientje' first went to South-Africa ("Z.A. Republic"), before going to Australia. She had a relation with N.J. Silvius.

In June I received a letter and a lot of pictures from descendants of de Gardeijn, see: de Gardeijn (Dutch) with (miniature) pictures or de Gardeijn (English): emigration to Williamson, Wayne, New York state.
The pictures are in the album: map 'Gardeijn_Elve'

2010

In May I received a "Persoons Kaart" of Johanna Christina van Leeuwen (source: CBG), who died on April 4, 1944 in Amsterdam.
See: (father) Nicolaas van Leeuwen The husband Aart remarried, and from the descendants I learned, that two sisters emigrated to Canada in 1951 and 1953, and I made contact with Aaltje 'Ali' van Leeuwen, she stayed in the Netherlands.

Ali allowed me to make a copy of the marriage booklet of her parents, see:
